The Guardian and Crikey share common ground on open government

Paul Farrell in The Guardian continues his series on the war against the Office of Australian Information Commissioner and Josh Thomas in Crikey (subscription) covers similar territory, Thomas canvassing initiatives Prime Minister Turnbull could take to give effect to his pledge to open and transparent government:
  • abandon plans to shut down the OAIC, 
  • undertake a complete overhaul of the Freedom of Information Act
  • look into record keeping in the digital information age
  • move FOI from the Attorney-General's Department into PM&C to take it away from just being "lawyers' business"
  • join the Open Government Partnership.

Open Government Partnership activity off and running

Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet  If you haven't so far, look at the published material , subscribe to the OGP Au mailing list for updates and news or follow the OGP Au RSS feed .  The department is interested in feedback by 11 December on the vision and framework  (Stage 1 Blog post ) and on the draft Background material. Australia going backwards on protection of privacy and information access

At a time when threats to privacy abound including from a federal government that lays claim to a watchdog role to safeguard our right to privacy, a government whose leader before the 2013 election committed to increasing government transparency and accountablity, Australia today has no permanent federal information commissioner , no federal privacy commissioner, and no federal freedom of information commissioner.  The Office of Australian Information Commissioner established in 2010 to enable the commissioners to carry out their functions with an initial estimate of staff required of 100, now has around 65.
